It is thought that midwives, whose tools were sometimes shaped like storks due to their association with babies, often carried needlework to while away long hours waiting for new arrivals. Over time their medical tools and sewing kits mixed and embroidery scissors picked up the stork design. Or perhaps the heron’s long beak shape just lends itself well to the design of scissors?
